Safe Job Procedures and Safe Work Practices
Safe job procedures provide specific step-by-step information to employees and outline how to conduct a particular task or operate equipment in a safe manner. In addition to specific sections of the Workplace Safety & Health Regulation, Part 2.1 requires employers to:
- Develop and implement procedures for the work that is done at the workplace;
- Train workers in the procedures; and
- Ensure that workers comply with the developed procedures.
Safe work practices are ways of controlling hazards and doing jobs with a minimum of risk to people and property. Safe work practices are generalized statements of what you should or should not do in order to do a job or task safety. Safe work practices are a great topic for toolbox talks, as they serve as good reminders of the ‘right’ way to do things. Management must understand and fully endorse these safe work practices and ensure that:
- Safe work practices are in writing
- All employees understand the safe work practices that apply to them
- All equipment and management support to permit compliance are available
- Supervisors ensure that all safe work practices are followed

A toolbox talk provides an opportunity for a supervisor to emphasize the importance of a particular issue or procedure, and for employees to ask questions or make serious comments or suggestions.

The Certificate of Recognition Program (COR™) is an occupational health and safety accreditation program that verifies a fully implemented safety & health program which meets national standards. The objectives of COR™ are to provide industry employers with an effective safety and health management system to reduce incidents, accidents and injuries as well as their associated human and financial costs.
The Small Employer Certificate of Recognition Program (SECOR™) is an occupational health and safety accreditation program that verifies a fully implemented safety & health program which meets provincial standards. The objectives of Small Employer COR™ are to provide industry employers, with less than 10 employees, with an effective safety and health management system to reduce incidents, accidents and injuries as well as their associated human and financial costs.
We can set up your entire safety program for you, from start to finish. We will work with your employees to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge to attain COR. Our job is not complete, until you are COR certified. The cost will depend on the size of your company, and existing safety program. Emergency First Aid & CPR (First aider 1) – 8 hour course
This course provides simple First Aid & CPR techniques taught in an interactive environment, for individuals who want an overview of First Aid & CPR for the home or workplace. The course covers skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for adults, CPR, and other topics such as choking, airway and breathing emergencies and prevention of disease transmission
Standard First Aid & CPR (First aider 2) – 16 hour course
This course provides comprehensive First Aid & CPR techniques for those who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the home or workplace. A variety of topics are covered from basic first aid such as cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR, prevention of disease transmission to more severe sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) is a national communication system dealing with controlled products. The three main components of whmis are labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS), and worker education. We will customize our whmis course around your company and the controlled products your employees work with.
Every employer on every jobsite must have a designated safety representative familiar with their legal duties and responsibilities. The safety rep will help with employee concerns and complaints, participate in the identification of risks to workers, inspections of the workplace, investigations, and the development and promotion of safety programs in the workplace.
Qualitative Fit Testing
A respirator can only be effective if it properly fits the user. While conducting fit testing, we take our time with individual respirator users to review necessary user seal checks as applicable. We will review how to put on a respirator, how it should be positioned on the face, how to set strap tension and how to determine an acceptable fit
Emergency First Aid- Adult Only
This course provides simple first aid techniques taught in an interactive environment, for individuals who want an overview of First Aid for the home or workplace. The course covers skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for adults.
Fall Protection Basics
This program has been designed to ensure that all your employees are protected against falls and that you are in compliance with the latest workplace fall protection requirements. The course covers surface protection, fixed barriers, surface opening protection, travel restraint systems, fall arrest systems, fall containment systems, harness and usage and introduction to rescues.
Confined Space Entry
The Confined Space course covers competencies within Workplace Safety and Health Regulations. It ensures participants have the skills they need to enter confined spaces as part of their work tasks. The course covers entry permits, ventilation, hardware, harnesses and equipment, tripods and hoists, atmospheric monitoring, and respiratory protection.
12 Panel Drug Testing
This test is a one step 12 panel drug test. The results of this test are instant. It is important to note that the results of an express test are qualitative, the results are either a pass or a fail and the level of the drug in the body is not determined. It tests for Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, Phencyclidine, Methadone, Propoxyphene, MDMA (ecstasy), and Extended Opiates. There is a consent form that is to be read, understood and signed by each person participating in the test before they give there sample.
The supervisor skills course is excellent for supervisory positions. As it will help define their role. It explains the responsibilities for ensuring safety of the work site. As well as provide knowledge to satisfy the legal duties and responsibilities of a supervisor under the workplace safety and health act.

Safety Chicks Ltd was formed by Carrie Thorpe in 2012. With over 10 years of experience in the construction industry as a safety officer, she saw a need for companies needing a friendly, reliable place to meet all their PPE needs.
Colleagues started asking her for help with their safety program as the safety requirements in the construction industry can be overwhelming. With that she now is happy to offer: consulting services, a retail store, and training programs that meet the growing demand.
