Safe Job Procedures and Safe Work Practices

Safe job procedures provide specific step-by-step information to employees and outline how to conduct a particular task or operate equipment in a safe manner. In addition to specific sections of the Workplace Safety & Health Regulation, Part 2.1 requires employers to:

  • Develop and implement procedures for the work that is done at the workplace;
  • Train workers in the procedures; and
  • Ensure that workers comply with the developed procedures.

Safe work practices are ways of controlling hazards and doing jobs with a minimum of risk to people and property. Safe work practices are generalized statements of what you should or should not do in order to do a job or task safety. Safe work practices are a great topic for toolbox talks, as they serve as good reminders of the ‘right’ way to do things. Management must understand and fully endorse these safe work practices and ensure that:

  • Safe work practices are in writing
  • All employees understand the safe work practices that apply to them
  • All equipment and management support to permit compliance are available
  • Supervisors ensure that all safe work practices are followed

We can help create new safe job procedures and safe work practices or update your existing ones.

Site Inspections

An inspection should achieve several purposes:

  • Identify existing and potential hazards
  • Identify safety code violations
  • Determine underlying causes of hazards
  • Monitor hazard controls
  • Determine corrective action to minimize or eliminate hazards
  • Reinforce and promote safe work practices

It should be seen as a fact-finding rather than a fault-finding exercise.

All areas need to be inspected including shop, yard, and office.

Section 7.4(5) (e) of the Workplace Safety & Health Act states that a workplace safety and health program must include a schedule for the regular inspection of the workplace and of work processes and procedures at the workplace.

We are able to assist you with your inspections and training employees on how to properly complete them. Whether you are trying to attain COR or wanting to improve your current safety program, we can help.

Hazard Assessments

A hazard assessment, also called a job hazard analysis (JHA) is a careful analysis of the potential hazard associated with a particular task, or an entire job site. The assessment breaks down the task into separate steps, examining each one for ways in which a worker could be hurt or property could be damaged, and determining controls to eliminate or reduce the hazards.

Section 7.4(5)(b) of the Workplace Safety & Health Act states that a workplace safety and health program needs to identify existing and potential dangers to workers at the workplace and the measures that will be taken to reduce, eliminate or control those dangers, including procedures to be followed in an emergency

We are able to assist you with your hazard assessments and training employees on how to properly complete them. Whether you are trying to attain COR or wanting to improve your current safety program, we can help.

Toolbox Talks

Section 44(3) of the Workplace Safety & Health Act requires each employer with 5 or more workers at a construction site to provide safety education or “toolbox talks” every 2 weeks for 30 minutes. The generally accepted practice is to conduct weekly toolbox talks for 15 minutes

Toolbox talks are short, daily discussions or presentations by qualified staff to the employees. Often participants gather around the project tool box, hence the name.

A toolbox talk is focused on one specific topic and addresses it in simple terms, and it is often related to safety issues.

A toolbox talk provides an opportunity for a supervisor to emphasize the importance of a particular issue or procedure, and for employees to ask questions or make serious comments or suggestions.

We can assist you in developing your job specific toolbox talks or present them to your company.

About Us

Safety Chicks Ltd was formed by Carrie Thorpe in 2012. With over 10 years of experience in the construction industry as a safety officer, she saw a need for companies needing a friendly, reliable place to meet all their PPE needs.

Colleagues started asking her for help with their safety program as the safety requirements in the construction industry can be overwhelming. With that she now is happy to offer: consulting services, a retail store, and training programs that meet the growing demand.

Carrie enjoys helping others and is a proud supporter of local groups such as Brandon Youth Hockey, Westman Youth Soccer and Brandon Wheat Kings.
